Juanita Johnstone
On September 4, 2007 Juanita Johnstone
passed away at home with her family by her side. The family received visitors at
Dakan Funeral Chapel,
She attended many community dances where she met James (Jim) Johnstone. On
October 22, 1941 Juanita married Jim Johnstone in Homedale and then resided at
the Johnstone family ranch near Homedale. Juanita and Jim had two sons, Alan and
Brian, prior to Jim passing away in April of 1953. Juanita continued to live on
the Johnstone farm and on June 3, 1955 married George Johnstone. Their daughter
Anita was born in 1962.
Juanita spent her life caring for her family, and family meant everything to her. She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother & friend. Mom was an excellent cook for our family, as well as the community and many hired farm hands and sheepherders. She especially loved the times spent at her South Mountain Cabin when family and friends would visit. Juanita had many talents; she was actively involved in the Homedale Christian Church and was the secretary/treasurer of the church for many years. When Anita was young she enjoyed being her Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was awarded Honorary Life Member of the Owyhee Cattlemen’s Association in 2005 and she loved to sew and continued to cross-stitch until the last weeks of her life.
Juanita is survived by three children, Alan Johnstone, Brian Johnstone of Homedale and Anita (Mike) Johnston of Caldwell; 9 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband George Johnstone, her parents and two sisters.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Juanita’s friends and
care givers, Donna Fisher, Linda Woodhall & Jerilynn Keisel for their care and
assistance in Juanita’s final weeks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be
given to the Homedale Christian Church,

George Johnstone
On May 21,
2005 George Johnstone passed away at home with his family by his side. The
family will receive visitors at Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 South Kimball Avenue,
Caldwell, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday May 25th. Funeral services will
be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 26th at Dakan Funeral Chapel with the
burial immediately following at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell. A luncheon
will follow at the Homedale Senior Center, 224 West Idaho Avenue, at 2:30 PM.
George was
born on January 14th, 1916 in Boise, Idaho to John and Janet Johnstone. He lived
at the Squaw Creek Ranch as a young boy and then moved to the Homedale Ranch. He
graduated from Homedale High School in 1935 and later graduated from Boise
Business College. George married Juanita Johnstone on June 3rd, 1955 in Nevada,
and then resided at the ranch in Homedale where he later raised his family.
George grew
up in the sheep business as a sheepherder. Each spring he trailed the sheep from
the Homedale Ranch to Strodes Basin and Poison Creek. The trail took him to the
Squaw Creek Ranch on Little Squaw Creek and McBride Creek. His summers were
spent at South Mountain above Jordan Valley moving the bands of sheep and camps
to new lush grass. George always observed and cared for the grass and the range.
Finally, in 1964 he made the decision to change to cattle because of sheep
prices and the loss of his sheepherders, camp tenders, and winter lambing crew.
The cattle
business was good to George, but he would always tell you that he would trade
all the cattle in the world for one band of sheep. The sheep business was his
life and he loved it as much as he loved his family.
George was an honorary lifetime member of the Owyhee Cattlemen’s Association,
was on the Owyhee County Soil Conservation Board, and the Boise District Grazing
Advisory Board. He was also recognized as the Grassman of the year.
George is
survived by his wife of 50 years, Juanita Johnstone of Homedale; three children,
Alan Johnstone and Brian Johnstone of Homedale, and Anita (Mike) Johnston of
Caldwell; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by his parents and one brother, James Kerr Johnstone.
George is
fondly remembered for teaching his children and later his grandkids to fish, and
for traveling with his wife. He left many happy memories of family gatherings at
his place on South Mountain.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to George’s CNAs, Donna
Fisher and Linda Woodhall for their care and assistance in George’s final days.
